One Year Ago...

One year ago this week...

  • I jokingly told my nephew Adam I thought I might have Ovarian cancer.  He jokingly replied "I hope not cause its really deadly and I probably won't see you again if you do."
  • I felt my bloated stomach and it felt as hard as a rock.
  • I knew I should call a Dr. to see if something was wrong.
  • Dr. Brown's office miraculously had a cancellation for an appointment.
  • Told Becky and Nanette at New Beginnings I probably had uterine fibroids and was having an ultrasound the next day.  Starting crying talking about it.
  • I looked at the ultrasound technicians face and knew I didn't have uterine fibroids.  Deep inside I knew I had cancer.
  • I told Dave in the most awful way possible .... txt'd him while he was in the dentist chair "not fibroids... ovarian cancer."
  • I sat shaking in my chair waiting for the technician to come in and tell me I needed to go see Dr. Brown at her office and tried to hold it together and he walked me out of the room.
  • I sat in Dr. Browns office shaking and she hugged me and told me it would be ok.   She was going to get me the best Dr. and take care of me.
  • I broke down in the hall of the hospital and sobbed and sobbed and sobbed.  What kind of mom gets ovarian cancer and dies... leaving her kids without a mom?
  • I sobbed at my sister's house until I could get it together to meet Dave.
  • I met Dave in a parking lot and cried.
  • We came home and told the kids and they planned Dave's ldssingles account.
  • I had 3 phone calls from Drs. by 8:45 am the next morning and knew this was serious.  Dumped maturation program on Misty and sobbed in her driveway.
  • Went to my first CT scan with Jenn and texted Lisa.  "Do you know anything about Dr. Zempolich."  Her reply -- "Oh she does all of the big horrible abdominal cancer surgeries none of the other Drs. want to do."  Oh shoot -- shouldn't have asked Lisa that question.  Didn't I learn yesterday not to text about cancer?
  • Went home and called Lisa.  Horrible way to tell a friend.
  • Called my family and some of my friends.  I can still remember exactly where I was standing in my room when I called Lisa, where I was in Costco parking lot when I called Scott, driving up 5th South with Dave when I called my dad.
  • Met with Dr. Zempolich and felt so comfortable turning over my life to her.  In awe she would come in on her day off for me.  Amazed that my surgery was set up to happen in just a couple of days.
  • Held it together pretty well during the day -- sobbed and sobbed and sobbed in bed each night.
  • Sitting in R.S. feeling so small and lonely when Stephanie Orison looked at me.  I could tell she was going to tell everyone I need their prayers.  As much as I did not want people to know, it felt like a relief not to carry this by ourselves.
  • Sat at my kitchen table listening to Roxanne's advice about surgery, chemo, cleansing, etc.  So grateful I had someone who I had watched endure this garbage for the last year -- and was still alive and positive and loving life.
Even now -- a year later as I type this tears are rolling down my cheeks and I'm having hard time holding it together.  The pain, the fear, the shock, the disbelief, the guilt, the anger all comes back in an instant.  The words "You Have Ovarian Cancer" still just make my stomach turn.

But as my great friend and personal cheerleader Rochelle told me, I'll never have to have the shock of hearing those words again.

And what also comes back to me is all of the love and support and encouragement.  Dave taking over my life, Jenn sitting with me waiting for appointments, my kids stepping up and giving me so much love, my family so close by our side, my sister telling me she wished she could take this for me, so many offers of service I don't even know what to do, Becca taking all of the calls for me, and on and on.

I still try to go back to the night before my surgery and how I felt. Oddly, I felt peace.  Sometimes during the past year I look back and think it might not have been peace as much as naivety.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have been able to imagine how horrible some moments of that next year would be.

In so many ways I've learned so much --- and sometimes I feel like I've learned so little.

Tonight -- I feel good.  I feel positive.  I feel like I can beat this whole thing.

At one year my CA 125 is great (10).  Anything under 35 is normal. 800 at surgery and now for the past 4 months it bounces around from 8 to 11.

Even with chemo and graves and everything else I am back to the most part of living a fairly normal life.

I was reminded this week how cruel this disease is.  One of my cancer friends that gave me a lot of encouragement and support when I really needed it, is not doing too well right now.  Stupid cancer seems to be getting the best of her.  My heart aches and breaks for her and her family.

One of my other cancer friends just got her results back and everything is great!

I know that at any time I could be either one of them.

Someone asked me yesterday what my prognosis is.  I rambled off the stats, explained my pros and cons, what I'm trying to do eating and exercising, etc., talked about how I feel emotionally... and then stopped.

Bottom line is -- my prognosis is whatever Heavenly Father wants it to be.

He has guided me through the last year and will continue to guide me... in what I hope is a very long life.

A year later.... I'm pretty darn proud of myself.  I'm tougher than I ever thought I could be.  My family and friends love me more than I deserve.   I've had blessings that I've not even asked for.

A year later .... I'm just so very grateful I could look back on this and smile at the fact that all things considered, I feel pretty darn good!

As for tomorrow, and I might not say the same thing.  That is one thing I have learned.  Take this day by day, don't expect too much, remember if I ever did think I had control of my life I was wrong.

A year later ... just so glad it is a year later!

I slept!!!!!!!

I slept through the night last night!

I slept through the  night last night!

Well... Got up once for a potty trip, but other than that I slept from 10p to 7a.  No itching either.

I think the chemo steroid crash perfectly collided with the thyroid medication working.

Wow.... Haven't felt this good in a morning for months.... And that is even with chemo!  (I'm mildly nauseated this morning, but it is amazing what sleep will do!)

This can't be my life!

You would think after a year of this I would be use to this new life.  (And yes it was one year ago today I called the doctor because I thought something was wrong.)

But as I walked into chemo today it felt like an out of body experience.  Like the real Steph was watching the fake Steph willingly walk in to a strange office and have poison administered into her veins.

The fake Steph is now waiting to see the doc and see blood results.

The fake Steph really wishes the real Steph could come back.

But both Stephs are just grateful for cute Sue who is going to entertain them during chemo today.

(wow... Weird post... Must be all f tis year anniversary stuff that is getting to me.)

Graves Disease ... Part 2

So I got a 2nd opinion on thyroid -- loved the new Dr.  100% night and day difference between the first endocrinologist

My appointment happened to fall on that really snowy Friday a few weeks ago so most of his patients had cancelled.  I think he was a little bored because he ended up spending almost an hour with us.

He explained everything in great details, ordered more blood tests to further narrow it down and for the 1st time in 3 months made me feel like I wasn't going crazy.  I had gotten to where I was itchy 24 hours a day, with it worse at night.  I'd have 2 or 3 baths a night just to get me through the night.  My head was getting so foggy I couldn't even think.  I had a rash from my knees to my ankles and I was eating 24 hours a day.

He found an old blood test from 2008 that showed I was borderline hyperthyroid then.  Not sure what has happened since then but he said it was very likely shot into Graves Disease after my hysterectomy.  A few other things I learned.

  • Thyroid stuff is very misdiagnosed.  Sometimes dermatology issues are caused by Graves. Thyroid
  • It can make you wacky.  He had a patient about my age run away from home and end up in the psych ward.  It was Graves disease.
  • Had a teen patient in a wilderness program, she was a super behavior problem.  Graves disease.
  • Possibility that my body could put it in remission and might not have to be on medication my whole life.
We decided to go ahead and try medication for a while and see if it helps.  I can always "kill" the thyroid later.  If it doesn't go into remission I'll be on medication for the rest of my life anyway.

The drug seems to be helping, although the first few days on it were a little "iffy."  I cancelled my chemo and honestly was hoping to drop out of the study.  But after talking to Dr. Z I'm going to give it another month and just make a decision month by month.

911 "I have no idea my address, I'm from Bountiful Utah!"

Dave and I were at Les Mis the other night and Lolo called me -- she is in Vegas at a soccer tournament.  I texted her and told her to txt me and I didn't hear back.  In the meantime Dave starting getting texts.  After about an hour he opened his phone to the text above.  He showed me and I decided I had better go see what happened.  Since I haven't actually seen her yet... she is still in Vegas ... this is what I can piece together after talking to her and my friend Julie.

Summary:

  • Lolo and her friend Savannah were staying at Savannah's aunt for the soccer tournament.
  • All of the adults went out to dinner and they stayed home -- getting ready for their 8pm game.
  • Savannah's uncle didn't know they were staying home and set the motion alarm.
  • A little while later Lolo and Savannah went downstairs -- and set of the alarm.
  • They were "alarmed" and had no idea they had set it off.
  • The alarm company called the uncle -- he said no one was home and he didn't know why it went off.
  • He sent the neighbor over to check it out.
  • The neighbor knocked -- Lolo and Savannah were freaked out so they didn't want to go to the door. Savannah decided to go and answer the door, but by then the neighbor had headed to the back of the house to check things out.
  • He knocked a garbage can or something -- and the girls heard it.  He then started looking in the windows to see if someone was in there.
  • They try calling Savannah's mom and she didn't answer
  • Girls grab what they can -- fire extinguisher and oil bottle for Savannah and Lauren had 8 knives in her hand.
  • At this point the girls were totally freaked out and hid in the closet.  Lauren called 911.
  • Lolo to 911 -- Help, help we are home alone and someone is trying to break in.
  • 911 -- Tell me your name and where you are.
  • Lolo -- Lauren and I have no idea where I am.  I live in Bountiful Utah.
  • 911 -- Who else is there.
  • Lolo -- Me and just another 15 year old.
  • 911 -- What does the house look like?
  • Lolo -- Mexican and it is brown.
  • You need to go and find something that has the address on it.
  • Apparently they found something because the police arrive.
  • The police and the neighbor and the girls check out the whole house.  The girls are still frantic and police assure them that no one is there.
  • Shortly thereafter Julie comes home realizing there is a problem.
  • They hysterically laughing tell the story and realize they were the ones to trip the alarm.
  • Lolo plays an awesome game.
Calling 911 and having an event like this is a dream of Lolo's.  Guessing this will be Lauren's favorite story ever... she'll be telling her kids 30 years from now!

Cameron's Own Version of A Christmas Story

Kenzi watching Cameron ... thinking Cam is crazy!!
Ok -- so not really Kenzi and Cameron, but it might as well have been.

They were outside last night throwing balls at the icicles and Kenzi came in for dinner.  About one minute later Cameron came in "Blaiahdfajl adlfja"  cry cry cry "jalsdfjomeka" with blood dripping out of his mouth.

Me:  "Cam did you suck on an icicle."
Cam:  "No, adjfadfiaeihe..." not understanding a word he said followed by tears and walking around in circles and crying and speaking in an inhuman language.

When he finally calmed down enough to speak in a human language I asked him again if he sucked on an icicle and he said "No, I was just trying to lick it and it got stuck on my tongue so I pulled it off."

My family was all over for dinner and between sincere sadness for Cam, there was a lot of laughter.

Fortunately he is a kid and heals quickly

One of the best compliments ever! And some ramblings about my new hair.

#1.  Preface this part with... when my kids first found out I would be losing my hair with chemo it did "take them back a bit."  Having a totally bald mom was not what they were used too.

Lauren in particular -- being 14 at the time -- was a little worried. One of her first comments was "Mom do you promise not to show up at my school looking like a sick cancer patient?"

At first she was hesitant for me to come to her track meets or soccer games, partially because of how I looked and because everyone wanted to talk to me and it would take forever to leave any place.

Gradually the self-consciousness left and she didn't seem to be bothered by it.

So, back to the compliment.

Last week we were driving down the street.

Lauren:  "Mom, I'm lucky to have you as my mom."
Me:  "Wow.  Thanks.  How come I deserve that compliment."
Lauren:  "You really rock the short, platinum blonde hair.  Most moms couldn't pull that off.  You also have a good shape for a mom your age."
Me:  Trying not to react too much -- "Thanks Lolo."

Still not sure where that came from, guessing maybe one of her friends said something to her... but Dave and I got a good laugh about it.

#2.  I also have to admit I love it when people who don't know I have cancer tell me they love my hair.  The cute kid at the grocery store yesterday said I had totally cool hair and pretty blue eyes.  Kenzi was worried Dave might not be happy if he had been there.  I assured him that since I was more than old enough to be the kid's mom it was ok.

#3.  Despite the teasing of my family and sisters tonight at dinner, I am finding enjoyment in "styling" the new hair.  I have two options now -- wearing it up (gel) and down (I put a hat on when I get out of the shower and it is flat).  Who knew a boys short haircut could have so many options.

Love the Choir!

98.7 Radio Performance

On a fairly regular basis -- when watching the choir perform -- I am so grateful Kenzi has had this opportunity.  She has done things she would never have been able to do, given so much service and learned so much.

Masa sent out an email today of all the performances they did this year -- Kenzi didn't do all of them, but amazing opportunities.

A small New Year's Miracle -- but to me it meant everything!

The little things in life mean the most ... and on New Year's Eve I got my first little miracle of the year.

I haven't slept through the night in months and months... and have hardly slept at all for the past few weeks. The Graves disease makes me itch, from the inside out, and I scratch and scratch all night long.

On the night of the 30th I was up until 5am, finally took a shower and fell asleep at 6am.  I was emotionally and physically exhausted.

So on New Year's Eve I asked Dave to give me a blessing... I really was about to lose it.

He blessed me that I would find some comfort until the Drs. can decide what to do.

And guess what... I slept for about 8 hours that night!!!  Of course I was up a few times for a potty run, but I immediately went back to sleep.  Although I would start to itch, I could just close my eyes and fall back to sleep.

May sound silly, but was the welcome relief I needed!  My own New Year's Eve miracle.

    The New Year's Wish I Can't Have...

Found out I have Graves Disease and my Dr. wants to kill my thryoid.  Basically my thryoid is working at twice (or more) as fast as it should be.  Generally Graves is genetic, but no one in my family has it.  So...it appears that it was trauma induced... I'm guessing it was the surgery, infection, losing 30 pounds and everything else that happened last February and March.  (Or who knows maybe I've had this for a long time.  I've had a high metabolism and fertility issues and thryoid can cause that.)

But I'm not willing to kill my thryoid right now.  I just feel like my body has been through so much this year that I just need to let it heal.  Not sure what my chemo doc will say as to whether or not I should drop out of the clinical trial.

I know it sounds lame -- Graves disease is a treatable thing and not usually life threatening.... but when I got online to read my results I cried.  And I just can't shake this sad feeling!

My New Year's Wish -- I JUST WANT MY OLD LIFE BACK!!!  MY OLD HEALTH BACK!!!

I followed the Word of Wisdom my whole life and have always taken care of myself and this is what I get?  (I know that is silly.  Little kids get horrible illnesses all of the time and it is nothing they have done.  I just am feeling a little sorry for myself this weekend.)

I have been trying so hard to focus on not dying and not having a recurrence ... and honestly I feel like I have been doing such a good job of this.  But this new little twist in the road has reminded me how I am not in control and makes me feel like my body is not strong and healthy right now.  It makes me feel vulnerable and I worry that my body won't fight off any cancer cells that may be lurking.

I know I have much to be grateful for and honestly and I am just happy to be here this New Year's.  And my true New Year's wish is that I will be around for a lot more New Year's Eves... enough that my kids will be much older than they are now.

But for now I'll enjoy a snowy New Year's with my family, eating, tubing, playing games and just being together.

Love this quote my niece Bethany posted on facebook tonight.

Brothers and sisters, no matter our circumstances, no matter our challenges or trials, there is something in each day to embrace and cherish. There is something in each day that can bring gratitude and joy if only we will see and appreciate it. -Dieter F. Uchtdorf

    A good thing about Hyperthyroid...

Trying to find the bright side of things...

A good thing about hyperthyroid -- I wore a skirt to church Sunday that I haven't been able to zip up for quite some time.

Ok... so I would trade the skirt to get rid of the swollen ankles that gross Lauren out (she gives me socks to wear so she doesn't have to look at them), the rapid heartbeat (had to find a couch to sit on while shopping the other day cause I could hardly breath), and the shaky hands (again... this drives Lauren nuts too.)

I saw the Endocrinologist and I have either Graves disease or drug induced hyperthyroid.  Unfortunately I can't do the thyroid intake test until December 26th because I take a multi-vitamin so I had to wait 2 weeks from then.  No multi-vitamin or shell fish until the test.  Too much iodine.

Depending on the result, the Endo doc and my chemo doc will give me their opinion as to whether or not I stay on the clinical trial.  So no chemo until at least January 8th.  Yay!!!!!!!

My chemo doc called and told me she thinks that perhaps I have had this for a while and that many of the symptoms we thought were chemo were actually hyperthyroid.  (I did feel vindicated since she told me I needed to do more cardio when I told her about my rapid heart rate and she said my ankles weren't really swollen when I could hardly seen them.)

The Endo doc thinks it is likely drug induced, the chemo doc thinks it isn't, and I think it was trauma induced after surgery and 1st chemo.

    We'll see next week!

In the meantime I'm loving the holidays and the beautiful music and feeling in the air... and my totally ripped apart house.  Remind me again why we thought it was a good time to do remodeling?

And I'm happy to have the energy to be running around enjoying Christmas.

    "The Girl has Spunk!"

Every since she was little Kenzi has been well... Kenzi.  She is very creative, resourceful and determined.  If she really wants something... she is relentless about getting it.  (Honestly she can drive me crazy sometimes.)  She can fix anything.  I always tell her she will never be homeless because she just has the persistence to do anything she puts her mind to.  In the past year she has taught herself the guitar and ukulele.  She spent hour after hour up in her room practicing and learning.  Five years ago Dave's laptop broke.  She found it a year ago and she asked if she paid for it if we could get it fixed.  Long story... but she finally found the cord, left me sweet notes about fixing it, and asked me every single day -- it now works!!!

Kenzi showed me again just how as Katie Jones said "spunky" she is.

Kenzi made the Millcreek Jr. High Basketball team!

I know.... I didn't know she played basketball either.

A few weeks ago she came home and said she was going to try out for basketball.  Dave and I smiled and thought good for her.  Honestly in my mind I thought there was no way she would ever make it.  Great mom I am huh?   I was just remembering back to her soccer days when she would ask her coach to take her out at halftime because she was tired.

But she got up every day for conditioning and every day came home more and more excited.  She said she was hungrier, she decided she loved running -- she and her friend even planned to go jogging.  This from the girl that 6 months ago would have said she is "not the athletic or sporty type."

She said to Dave on the first morning of conditioning "I am only trying out for fun and the exercise."  Dave told her she should never go into something expecting failure.  If she was going to try out she needed to try out to make it.

At the end of conditioning she told me she really thought she had a chance of making it.

So when they announced her name yesterday she was ecstatic!  Grandpa helped her celebrate with a dinner at Cafe Rio.

And she was off to her 1st practice at 5:30 am this morning.

The only disappointing part is that her best friend didn't make it.  She has made the 1st cut, but didn't make the final team.  My girls reminded me of my "not making cheerleader when my friend did" -- these valuable lessons are hard to learn.

Kenzi -- good job!  Proud of you!  Can't wait to see you play!  And as Katie says "You have spunk."

(And Kenzi is the queen of taking pictures of herself -- just throwing in a few of her funny ones.)

It's All Relative ... Did Cancer Cause this or did this Cause Cancer

After a very stressful 5 or 6 days -- worried that I was having a recurrence -- I went to the Dr. today for  blood tests and a thyroid ultrasound.  It appears that I may have a hyperthyroid.

I will be making an appointment with an endocronologist tomorrow.  Just what I wanted, another specialist in my life.

Funny -- a year ago if you had told me I had Graves Disease or something that was causing hyperthyroid I would have been so stressed.  Now as I read about it, treatments, etc., it feels like just another day in the life of Stephanie.  Part of me is pretty mad.  Do I really need another illness to deal with?  Where is the justice when I've taken such good care of myself my whole life?  Have I always had this and did this cause my ovarian cancer -- or vise versa?

But in comes perspective.  It isn't thyroid cancer.  It isn't probably a recurrence of Ovarian cancer.  And so I can deal with it.  I can handle it and the good news is -- making my shaking hands and racing heart will soon disappear.

    Interesting article... http://thyroid.about.com/od/hormonepregnantmenopause1/l/aa033100a.htm.
    Makes me wonder.

Can't Decide if I want to Grow more or not...

Let me preface this by being up front -- this has not been a great week for me emotionally.  I've had some issues that have come up that while not alarming, are not particularly good.  I realize I have only been dealing with this "stuff" for 10 months, but it is beginning to feel like a lifetime and this week I just want it to all be over.

I was joking with a friend, whose family is also going through a different but very hard and long term trial right now, that I am ok being mediocre.  I realize trials are supposed to strengthen us and make us better, but this week I honestly feel like I'd be perfectly content exactly where I am currently.  No more growth, no more refining -- mediocrity is ok with me.

Another friend and I were talking about trials and she told me about a great conference talk.  I listened to it this morning.  It is by Paul V. Johnson and was entitled "More Than Conquerors through Him That Loved Us."

The challenge for me this week if believing this and wanting this.  My sweet sister invited me to the temple this week and one of my sweet friends has listened to me worry and complain over and over and over.  I am blessed with so many good people in my life -- if I emotionally hold up through this latest rounds of stress it will be because of them.

Here are a few parts of the talk that really struck me... and my "is it ok to be happy with mediocre" feeling this week.

At times it may seem that our trials are focused on areas of our lives and parts of our souls with which we seem least able to cope. Since personal growth is an intended outcome of these challenges, it should come as no surprise that the trials can be very personal—almost laser guided to our particular needs or weaknesses. And no one is exempt, especially not Saints striving to do what’s right. Some obedient Saints may ask, “Why me? I’m trying to be good! Why is the Lord allowing this to happen?” The furnace of affliction helps purify even the very best of Saints by burning away the dross in their lives and leaving behind pure gold.6 Even very rich ore needs refining to remove impurities. Being good is not enough. We want to become like the Savior, who learned as He suffered “pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind.”7

In the midst of problems, it is nearly impossible to see that the coming blessings far outweigh the pain, humiliation, or heartbreak we may be experiencing at the time. “No chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”13 The Apostle Paul taught, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”14 It is interesting that Paul uses the term “light affliction.” This comes from a person who was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, imprisoned, and who experienced many other trials.15 I doubt many of us would label our afflictions light. Yet in comparison to the blessings and growth we ultimately receive, both in this life and in eternity, our afflictions truly are light.

Sometimes we want to have growth without challenges and to develop strength without any struggle. But growth cannot come by taking the easy way. We clearly understand that an athlete who resists rigorous training will never become a world-class athlete. We must be careful that we don’t resent the very things that help us put on the divine nature.
Not one of the trials and tribulations we face is beyond our limits,because we have access to help from the Lord. We can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.16
